Communication and engagement

We heard from groups across Grampian who had lots of experiences to share. They felt their experiences were valuable examples that we should listen to more. Many people recognised it was difficult to communicate at the pace needed during the pandemic to ensure everyone was aware of all the changes. However, there was a desire that we work on this in the future.

It was felt important we use lots of different ways to communicate, as one way doesn’t suit everyone. We also heard that people were looking for clarity and honesty in our communications. This was when we communicate with the whole population and also in individual conversations with a health professional on what options a person has.

Empowering individuals

We asked what keeps you well. Many of you shared the things you do to look after your health and wellbeing. You are the expert in your health. Those with long-term conditions told us they wanted support to manage their condition. They wanted this support in a way that fits with their life, and they want to have more say in how their care is managed.

We also heard from parents, who shared difficulties in getting advice to help them care for their children. They felt this advice would help their children grow up healthier and more resilient. It was acknowledged that sometimes parents don’t need an “appointment” but just a quick way of talking to someone to check a minor problem.

Enabling the workforce

The pandemic has been challenging for our colleagues in health and social care. We heard lots of examples of how difficult it has been. There were many concerns about the pressure on colleagues and how they need more support. There were also comments on how we attract and retain staff, particularly in rural areas and in specialist services.

As well the challenges, many of you had stories about great teams and colleagues, recognising the hard work and compassion they showed despite the pressures. We were touched to hear these and shared many quotes with colleagues to show them the difference they can make. An example of a ‘Positivitree’ we created is here.
