Aberdeen Royal Infirmary

Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI) is the largest hospital within NHS Grampian. These pages contain information which you and your relatives or carers may find useful during a stay or visit.  If you are unsure about anything while at the hospital, please ask a member of staff, they will be happy to help.

Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is based on the Foresterhill site - to help find your way around the site, as well as the location of wards, visit 'Finding your way at ARI'.

Parking

At Foresterhill Health Campus

Foresterhill Health Campus Site Map (pdf) - shows locations of car parking in and around the site

Parking measures are in place on weekdays between 6.30am and 4pm. However, spaces remain limited so please consider using other methods of transport.  At evenings and weekends, you can park in any clearly marked parking space anywhere on the site.

The central section of Foresterhill Road is for emergency vehicles and buses only. All other vehicles should use the 'loop road' which goes round the Lady Helen Parking Centre to the west of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI).

The hospital cannot accept responsibility for vehicles or belongings left in hospital grounds. Please do not leave any valuables in your car.

Patient Parking

Please take your appointment letter with you. You will need this to access parking on the hospital site.

Main hospital site

Access to the main site is for disabled badge holders, outpatients with valid appointments, patient drop offs and collections, emergency vehicles and staff only.

You can only enter the main site by showing your appointment letter to the attendant at the barrier. Areas for patients' parking are clearly signposted.

Due to the pressure on parking spaces, please do not park in the car park for the duration of your stay in hospital.  However, if this is unavoidable, please let the ward staff know on your arrival so that parking staff can be informed.

You must only park in the areas designated for patients. If you park inappropriately (for example on the grass or pavement, blocking an entrance or exit, in a restricted area or in any emergency vehicle or ambulance bay) you will receive a Civil Parking Remedy (parking ticket).

Visitors are not permitted to park on the main hospital site between 6.30am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.

Long term / frequent patients

There are parking bays (marked 'Long Term Patients') for those patients who have to attend frequently, over a long period of time or for continuing treatment. Parking attendants will direct you to these spaces.

Lady Helen Parking Centre (Patients and Visitors only)

This facility has been generously funded by The Wood Foundation. A condition of this funding is that the facility is for the use of patients and visitors only.

We would appeal to members of the public to only use this facility when they have an appointment or a relative or friend to visit. Taking advantage of these spaces at other times will prevent genuine visitors from attending appointments or spending precious time with loved ones.

This car park is not open to contractors or members of the public unless they are attending an appointment/visiting a patient.

The multi-storey car park may be used by staff (whilst on work duties), provided they use Level 6 and above only. The lower levels must be kept free to allow patients and visitors easy access to clinical buildings.

Entry will be controlled by barrier and automatic number plate recognition. NHS Grampian staff will patrol the facility to monitor usage. Frequent users may find their use of the car park queried but genuine visitors to the site will not face any penalty.

Disabled parking

Parking for disabled blue badge holders is available near all entrances on the main site. Spaces are clearly marked.  Please make sure that you display a valid blue badge at all times. Parking attendants will ask to see your badge before allowing you access and your badge must belong to you or a passenger in your vehicle.

Blue badge holders must not park on double yellow lines within the complex. This is to allow continual access for emergency vehicles, including fire engines.

Drop off points

If you are being dropped off or collected by a relative or friend there are drop off zones (30 minute maximum stay) in the following areas:
  • near the main entrance (spaces are next to the Ambulance entrance which is staff access only)
  • at the Rotunda (revolving door) entrance of ARI

Any vehicle stopping in a drop off zone must be attended throughout the drop off/collection.  Please note that vehicles parked in drop off zones for more than 30 minutes are subject to a Civil Parking Remedy (parking ticket).

Do I have to pay for parking?

There is no charge for parking on the Foresterhill site.  There is a charge for the council spaces on roads surrounding the site.

As well as parking on the main hospital site, patients and visitors can also use the Lady Helen Parking Centre. Parking attendants are on duty at peak times and will be able to direct you.

Patient Transport

Shuttle Bus

A free shuttle bus service operates around the Foresterhill Health Campus and between the Foresterhill site, Summerfield House, Woodend Hospital, Royal Cornhill Hospital and the Health Village. This service is available for staff, patients and visitors, and operates Monday to Friday. Routes and timetables can be found at the shuttle bus stops and on the NHS Grampian website.

Macmillan Navigator service

The Macmillan Navigator service is a human voice at the end of the phone when life looks uncertain and worrying. We support patients and their families where we can, through the often hard to navigate journey of having cancer. Checking appointment times, chasing up scans, putting patients in touch with their clinical teams to answer their questions, are just a few examples of what the service does.

The contact details for the Macmillan Navigator service are gram.cancernavigator@nhs.scot

The service operates Mon to Thur 9am-5pm and Friday 9am-4pm.
