Psychology in Rheumatology

What happens when I see the Psychologist?

You will have an appointment to talk to the Psychologist. They will give you the opportunity to talk through how you are getting on and to discuss any areas you feel you might like help with.

How can I make best use of this service?

Your Psychologist will discuss ways of improving your coping in various situations and may give you exercises to take away or self-help resources to access. As with any technique the more practice you do with these the more they will help you. You will build your mental abilities for the times when they are needed and thus improve your quality of life.

Do I have to ask to see a psychologist?

Sometimes your Doctor / Nurse or other health professional may suggest that you might like to see the Psychologist as an added coping strategy. You may be given a short list of questions to answer to help the psychologist understand how you are getting on before you have the appointment.

Alternatively you can ask the health professional you see and they can arrange for you to be referred to psychology.
