Laxatives

Using laxatives will not help you lose weight. Laxatives reduce the absorption of water in the lower gut but do not alter the absorption of food. Laxatives may make you "feel empty" but in reality all you are losing is water.

Abuse of laxatives leads to dehydration and its associated complications. Persistent use of laxatives results in the digestive system becoming lazy and inefficient. When you try to cut down or stop taking them altogether you may become bloated because of water retention and constipated because the large intestine has become unused to working by itself. These symptoms will disappear with time when your body has been given a chance to function normally again. This may take many weeks.
