Preparing Psychologically for Surgery

Thinking about surgery can often lead us to feel scared and nervous. This is normal and is commonly reported.

Signs of stress often include:

  • Racing heart
  • Breathlessness
  • Nausea
  • Muscle tension
  • Feeling hot
  • Sleeplessness
  • Racing thoughts

Surgery does not take place in isolation and can impact on many aspects of your life including relationships, work, and your ability to complete daily tasks. Some suggestions about how to help you prepare psychologically are provided below:

  • Learn about the procedure beforehand and share any concerns with your doctor. If helpful, prepare a written list of questions.
  • Talk through your worries and concerns with family or friends.
  • Simple relaxation and breathing techniques can help reduce stress.
  • One of the most effective strategies is to breathe more slowly. Drop your shoulders and breathe slowly in for 4 and then breathe slowly out for 4.
  • Overthinking or focusing too much on surgery can sometimes be unhelpful.

Distract yourself with activities you enjoy such as listening to your favourite music or audiobook or bringing something to read or write.
